Homeopathy - A Natural Alternative for Crohn's Disease

Crohn's Disease, also known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease involves chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The cause is unknown, but it is regarded as an autoimmune disease and there appears to be a hereditary link. There are theories as to the cause of Crohn's Disease such as an excessive consumption of sucrose (table sugar), excessive use of antibiotics, and the presence of free radicals and intestinal permeability. Another strongly suspected cause is an infection of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Also implicated are the increased levels of Homocysteine found in both the mucosa and plasma of Crohn's Disease patients. Foods that may exacerbate Crohn's are dairy products, wheat and baker's yeast. On the other hand, supplemental zinc, Glutathione and bovine cartilage in the form of gelatin may be useful in restoring the integrity of the intestines (1).

How can homeopathy help?

A homeopathic nosode is prepared from human diseased tissue, using the preparation method of ultra-high dilution so that none of the original substance remains other than nanoparticles. These are ultra-fine particles finer than 8,000th of the width of a human hair and have been attributed to the reason why water has "memory" and may be the beginning of an understanding of the mechanism behind homeopathy. Nosodes are prescribed using the homeopathic principle of "like cures like" and are often used alongside a constitutional remedy to deal with underlying "miasms" or taints that have been passed down or aquired. The nosode Johnenium (2) is made from the bacterium Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis. It has been found to be useful in patients with a range of bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel as well as Crohn's Disease. With homeopathy we do not treat the disease itself, but offer support and often a catalyst so the body will respond and heal itself. Therefore the mind symptoms must also correspond to the remedy that is chosen. The underlying feeling behind Johnenium is of being persecuted with anxiety and torment over losing money or possessions. This can be somatised in the body as a feeling of "tightness" which is a typical sensation of a Crohn's Disease symptom.
